What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

by Dowagiac Family Dentistry | Oct 3, 2022 | Dental Hygiene

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do

Seeing a dental hygienist regularly is important. But what does a dental hygienist do? And how often should you see one? Dental hygienists help to ensure that your teeth stay healthy, clean, and bright. Here’s how.

The Importance of Dental Cleanings

If you brush and floss your teeth regularly, you probably wonder if you still need to see a dental hygienist. Caring for your teeth at home is important, so don’t stop what you’re doing! But even the best at-home dental care routines can miss surfaces of your teeth that might be difficult to reach or clean thoroughly.

This is where a dental hygienist comes in! But what exactly does a dental hygienist do that you can’t do at home?

Dental hygienists have special tools and expertise that enable them to get to all those difficult areas and make sure that plaque and tartar don’t have a fighting chance! The benefits of getting your teeth professionally cleaned are numerous, including reduced risk of cavities, stain removal, and improved gum health.

Do You Need a Dental Cleaning?

Now that we’ve answered the question, “What does a dental hygienist do?” you’re probably wondering if you’re due for a dental cleaning. If it’s been more than 6 months since your last dental cleaning, it’s time to make an appointment! Or if you notice signs of tartar buildup, staining, increased sensitivity to cold foods or drinks, puffy or tender gums, or discomfort when chewing, those are also your cue to call your dentist right away.

Talking with Your Dentist about Dental Cleanings

Everybody’s smile is unique, so it’s important to have a conversation with your dentist about how often you should get dental cleanings.

If your smile is healthy, dental cleanings are typically recommended every 6 months. But if you have a health condition that might impact your dental health or a history of dental issues such as gum disease, your dentist might recommend that you get one more often to help keep your smile in top shape and prevent problems from occurring in the future.

Having a dental care plan that is specifically tailored to your health and lifestyle is the best way to ensure that your smile continues to look and feel its very best!

Call our Dowagiac Dental Office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.

Dear Patient:

We have been thinking about you and hope that you and your family are safe and healthy. Everyone has been through a lot and is ready to start normal routines again. As we welcome you back to our office, we want to reassure you that your safe treatment here is our number one goal.

We are following the most recent advice from the CDC and our professional organizations to make changes to keep you, our other patients, and our staff, safe from infection. Some changes include:

• Our staff will ask you screening questions before your appointment.
• Please use the hand sanitizer that we have available when you come into the office.
• We have removed hard-to-disinfect items in the waiting room to make it easier to clean frequently during the day.
• We are allowing more time between appointments to manage social distancing between patients.
• We may ask you to wait in your car instead of the waiting room.
• We also ask that you come into the office alone. If necessary, one caregiver or family member may come in with the patient.
• We may take your temperature before your appointment.
• You may see that all staff, including the front office staff, will be wearing masks.
• We ask that everyone who enters the office wear a face covering or mask.
• There may be other changes as we try to keep social distancing to six feet.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we are taking to keep you, and every patient, safe in our office. Please call our office at 269-782-5161 or visit our website if you have any questions or to make an appointment.

Thank you for your understanding.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
Dowagiac Family Dentistry
