How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

Regular check-ups are important for your health and your teeth, too! How often should you visit the dentist? Here’s what you need to know about routine dental visits to help ensure that your dental health stays in top form.

What is a Routine Dental Visit?

Just like a primary doctor recommends regular check-ups, dentists recommend them, too! Regular check-ups are important because they give your doctor or dentist a chance to spot problems before they turn into something serious.

Routine dental visits also typically include a professional dental cleaning. Professional cleanings are important because plaque and tartar can accumulate along the gum line and between the teeth in difficult-to-reach areas that can be hard to clean with a regular toothbrush. Your dental hygienist has the special skills and professional tools to reach those areas and help make sure that the plaque buildup doesn’t cause problems like cavities or gum disease.

How Do You Know When to Visit the Dentist?

Now that we’ve addressed the question, “What is a routine dental visit?” let’s address the next one: “How often should you visit the dentist?”

If your smile is healthy and you don’t have a history of dental problems, it’s normally recommended that you visit the dentist bi-annually or every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning. Your dentist might recommend more frequent visits, though, if you have a health condition that could impact your teeth or gums or if you have a history of dental problems.

If you need help making a dental care plan, talk with your dentist at your next visit. They’ll be happy to advise you based on your dental health needs. If you have more questions like, “How often should you visit the dentist?” they’ll also be happy to address those so that you can feel confident that your dental care plan will meet your needs.

Schedule Your Visit Early!

Visiting the dentist regularly is important, so make sure to prioritize it! The best way to do this is to schedule your visits in advance. It’s not uncommon for our schedule to fill up quickly – and we know your busy schedule is the same way! Scheduling early can help you make sure that you can visit the dentist when it works best for you and that your visits don’t get delayed by other things in life.

Call our Dowagiac Dental Office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.

Dear Patient:

We have been thinking about you and hope that you and your family are safe and healthy. Everyone has been through a lot and is ready to start normal routines again. As we welcome you back to our office, we want to reassure you that your safe treatment here is our number one goal.

We are following the most recent advice from the CDC and our professional organizations to make changes to keep you, our other patients, and our staff, safe from infection. Some changes include:

• Our staff will ask you screening questions before your appointment.
• Please use the hand sanitizer that we have available when you come into the office.
• We have removed hard-to-disinfect items in the waiting room to make it easier to clean frequently during the day.
• We are allowing more time between appointments to manage social distancing between patients.
• We may ask you to wait in your car instead of the waiting room.
• We also ask that you come into the office alone. If necessary, one caregiver or family member may come in with the patient.
• We may take your temperature before your appointment.
• You may see that all staff, including the front office staff, will be wearing masks.
• We ask that everyone who enters the office wear a face covering or mask.
• There may be other changes as we try to keep social distancing to six feet.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we are taking to keep you, and every patient, safe in our office. Please call our office at 269-782-5161 or visit our website if you have any questions or to make an appointment.

Thank you for your understanding.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
Dowagiac Family Dentistry
