Do You Need a New Toothbrush?

by Dowagiac Family Dentistry | Feb 1, 2023 | Dental Care

Do You Need a New Toothbrush

Do your teeth not feel as clean as they used to after brushing? Do you need a new toothbrush? Many people don’t know that toothbrushes can wear out and that an old toothbrush can be less effective at cleaning their teeth. Here’s how to know when to replace your toothbrush.

Signs Your Toothbrush Needs Replacing

If you’re wondering whether you need a new toothbrush, there are some easy-to-spot signs. First of all, if your toothbrush is more than 3 months old, go ahead and replace it! Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every few months, whether they show signs of being worn out or not.

If it has yet to be 3 months, but the bristles look frayed or faded, these are clear signs that it’s time to replace it. Worn-out bristles are less effective at cleaning your teeth, and you want to be sure you get a thorough clean every time you brush! If your toothbrush has a musty smell or you notice any discoloration at the base of the bristles, it’s also a good idea to replace it, as it could be harboring mold or mildew.

Do you need a new toothbrush but don’t know where to start when shopping for one? Read on for the tips you need!

What to Look for in a New Toothbrush

When shopping for a new toothbrush, look for one with a seal of approval from the American Dental Association (ADA). The toothbrush should also have soft bristles that will be gentle on your gums and tooth enamel.

Toothbrushes come in a wide variety of sizes, from compact to full size, so make sure to get the size that works best for your mouth and dental care needs. For example, if you have a small mouth or wisdom teeth, the compact size can help you reach those difficult-to-reach areas at the back of your mouth.

Advantages of an Electric Toothbrush

Do you need a new toothbrush? Should take the opportunity to upgrade to an electric toothbrush? That’s a great question! Electric toothbrushes come with many features like built-in timers, pressure sensors, and the capability to connect with smartphone brushing apps to help support healthy habits and better brushing techniques.

If you’re unsure whether an electric toothbrush is right for you or which model to get, your dentist is the perfect person to ask for advice on which features will best meet your individual dental care needs!

Call our Dowagiac Dental Office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.

Dear Patient:

We have been thinking about you and hope that you and your family are safe and healthy. Everyone has been through a lot and is ready to start normal routines again. As we welcome you back to our office, we want to reassure you that your safe treatment here is our number one goal.

We are following the most recent advice from the CDC and our professional organizations to make changes to keep you, our other patients, and our staff, safe from infection. Some changes include:

• Our staff will ask you screening questions before your appointment.
• Please use the hand sanitizer that we have available when you come into the office.
• We have removed hard-to-disinfect items in the waiting room to make it easier to clean frequently during the day.
• We are allowing more time between appointments to manage social distancing between patients.
• We may ask you to wait in your car instead of the waiting room.
• We also ask that you come into the office alone. If necessary, one caregiver or family member may come in with the patient.
• We may take your temperature before your appointment.
• You may see that all staff, including the front office staff, will be wearing masks.
• We ask that everyone who enters the office wear a face covering or mask.
• There may be other changes as we try to keep social distancing to six feet.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we are taking to keep you, and every patient, safe in our office. Please call our office at 269-782-5161 or visit our website if you have any questions or to make an appointment.

Thank you for your understanding.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
Dowagiac Family Dentistry
